Hi everyone, I'd like to say that I have enjoyed so far working on the proposal project and hope all of us will be successful at whatever it is we are trying to communicate. I am not sure at this point and still feel a little insecure about the whole thing. But, as far as the reading is concerned, I would like to point out that the Bonk and Zhang, Clark and Mayer chapters that we've been assigned to read have been very helpful in trying to discern how to build a virtual learning community. Since I would like to move forward with Suzanne and my proposal even after this class, I feel these two books in particular will help us learn to design and format a VLC that has a better chance at meeting the goals we desire and possibly helping it move forward and be successful. Only time will tell. I found Clark and Mayer's chapters 7 about the extraneous audio and video particularly helpful. I don't think I would have realized the problems that occur with learning presented material if I had not read this chapter. I had not realized how important it is to link the audio with the video to help aleviate the brain from having to try so hard to assimilate both of these different mediums. I guess because I am so used to just viewing asynchronous text material it was eye opening for me. Good luck to everyone on our upcoming presentations!

Janine,
ReplyDeleteI am also insecure and nervous about putting together my community. I can visualize it in my mind, but do I have the ability to put it all together?? I have set up my PBWorks site and have watched several YouTube videos on how to get going on setting up the site, but I feel like I am doing something wrong or it is going to look non-professional. So, you are not alone in your feelings! Good luck with your Project, you and Suzanne have a strong proposal.

I am with both of you on being a little nervous about putting the community together. But, I am also excited to see how it and others will turn out. I agree with you Janine on the two books in our class. I plan on keeping them because I would like to set up another community at a later date. It would be exciting to see participants all over the country log in to a site we have created that could enhance someones learning. Great post. Suzanne
ReplyDeleteThanks Suzanne. I have really enjoyed working with you. I think it is true that workin in teams although sometimes difficult increases our learning. I know that the various groups I have been lucky enough to be a part of this semester has really helped my critical thinking by making me consider others opinions and also because often things I did not understand someone else did and vice-versa. This class in particular though difficult to keep up with has probably been the class I've learned the most from. I really appreciate Dr. Ge's synchronous discussions and think they helped the light bulb come on for me. I am also grateful that she follows the online learning protocols with feedback etc. The recordings of the synchronous meetings have really been a life-saver for me. I hope our classmates will continue to blog and we can continue to blog with them and share our online learning/teaching experiences!
